California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said he’s directed his state to monitor potential threats after President Donald Trump suggested he wouldn’t care if Iran decided to “take out” Los Angeles and San Diego.

“Donald Trump’s remarks were dangerous — if not treasonous — putting a target on two of our biggest cities and one of America’s largest naval hubs,” Newsom posted on X Tuesday.

“I am directing the State Threat Assessment Center to actively monitor the situation in the event that foreign actors interpret the President’s remarks as an invitation to target California,” Newsom added.

Newsom was referring to comments Trump made Monday night during a rally in Nebraska.

“Remember, with the war, it’s just artificial,” Trump told the crowd. He was referring to the rising cost of higher fuel prices that he caused when he started a war with Iran in February.

“It’s a little bit high,” he continued. “It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, for keeping our country safe.”

Trump then suggested Iran could take out Los Angeles and San Diego and he wouldn’t care.

“They can take out a city,” he said. “Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego.”

The crowd cheered at his remarks.

Newsom responded to Trump’s comments later that night in a post on X.

“After sending the National Guard and Marines to occupy California, Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should ‘take out’ Los Angeles and San Diego,” Newsom posted. “He is deranged and dangerous.”

In another post on Tuesday, Newsom blasted Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“The SILENCE from JD Vance and Marco Rubio today is deafening,” he said.

White House communications director Steven Cheung defended Trump’s remarks in a social media post Tuesday.

“The media freakout over President Trump’s comments is not rooted in reality,” Cheung said. “He was clearly stating U.S. cities would have been threatened if a nuclear Iran hadn’t been stopped.”

Cheung did not explain why Trump mentioned Democrat-led cities like Los Angeles and San Diego in his example.

“America is safer because of the President,” Cheung added. “Iran has no nuclear, no navy, no air force, and no money.”

Despite Cheung’s claims, the U.S. remains at war with Iran, with no clear end in sight.
