Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayPresident Donald Trump’s trollish remarks at a Nebraska rally Monday night aren’t sitting too well with California leaders.
During a rally meant to promote Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts, the president suggested that higher prices resulting from war with Iran are worth it for the country’s safety.
“It’s a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe,” he said.
Then Trump added: “They can take out a city. Let ’em take out Los Angeles, let ’em take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay.”
White House staffers later said that the president meant he wanted to prevent Tehran from attacking the U.S., though it sure sounded like he didn’t care about San Diego or LA.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) called Trump’s comments “disgusting and disqualifying” on X, while his press office tweeted, “This is not normal. None of this is.”
Let’s be clear: The President is advocating for an attack on 10+ million U.S. residents in two of America’s largest cities.
This is not normal. None of this is.
And we will continue to remind folks of that every day. https://t.co/rkPYE1l4wm
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also commented on two separate accounts.
On her official mayoral account, she said, “The role of a president is to protect the country, not to actively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives.”
The President of the United States suggested that a foreign government attack Los Angeles. His statements against our city are dangerous and could potentially compromise our safety.

She was more blunt on her personal account, saying, “Keep LA out of your damn mouth.”
San Diego leaders and representatives also spoke out.
San Diego is not collateral damage.
We are not expendable.
And we are never a "small price to pay."
Keep our city out of your reckless war talk. https://t.co/06z2qsEIMr
My constituents — including many active duty service members, veterans, and their families — are not acceptable collateral damage in Trump’s stupid war. https://t.co/wAMxUC7iam
— Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (@RepSaraJacobs) October 6, 2026San Diego is a proud military town, home to 115,000 courageous active duty servicemembers and their families. Military service is at the root of our community and culture. This month we await the return home of the sailors and marines still stranded on the USS Lincoln for months… https://t.co/kqMcf7l6ao
— Rep. Scott Peters (@RepScottPeters) October 6, 2026Today at his rally, the President of the United States said this about Iran. "Let them take out Los Angeles or San Diego. This is a very small price to pay."
No American city is a small price to pay.
No American life is.
Whatever he meant, a Commander in Chief should never…
Both of California’s Democratic U.S. senators blasted Trump’s message.
At least 19 servicemembers have made the ultimate sacrifice in Trump’s unauthorized war with Iran —including Noah Tietjens of Nebraska.
Now Trump is in Nebraska inviting an attack on U.S. soil, putting millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of our servicemembers at risk… https://t.co/bjX79gdn8x
The President says the Iran war will end "very soon."
How many times have we heard that promise?
And if it means attacks on two major American cities in the process, he is not troubled by the cost. https://t.co/C5kUvUuj5y
But Republicans were conspicuously silent. GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton did not immediately respond to a request for comment from HuffPost.
However, at least one GOP politician in California wasn’t happy with Trump’s remarks.
Jim Desmond, who is running to represent the 48th Congressional District, posted that he “vehemently” disagrees with the president’s comments and added, “No American city is expendable, and no American family should ever be treated as collateral damage.”
I vehemently disagree with President Trump’s comments. America must stand up to Iran and defend our interests, but the first responsibility of our Commander in Chief is to protect the American people and our homeland.
As a Navy veteran, I served to protect Americans, not write…
