Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayFormer Trump White House attorney Ty Cobb warned Wednesday that Donald Trump and members of his administration “are doing everything they can to interfere with” next week’s midterm elections, and predicted, “they will continue that effort, sadly, probably likely beyond the elections.”
Cobb, who served in Donald Trump’s first administration and is now a vocal critic of his onetime boss, issued the stark warning on NBC News’ “Meet The Press NOW.”
Host Kristen Welker had highlighted what she called the “unprecedented flurry of activity by the Justice Department in the weeks leading up to Election Day.”
Among the moves, she noted the department has sought “to segregate thousands of mail-in ballots in California” from people it believes “may not be U.S. citizens,” despite noncitizen voting being rare in the U.S., and has filed a lawsuit seeking to block Alaska’s Senate certification if incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan (R) loses, amid a dispute stemming from two candidates named Sullivan appearing on the ballot.
On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that Democratic operatives in Alaska looked for people named Dan Sullivan to become a so-called “spoiler” candidate in a bid to dilute the vote for the Republican namesake.
Watch here:
Cobb called the California case “largely meritless” and said the Alaska lawsuit is “pretty cut and dried” because Republican Sullivan is clearly identified as the incumbent on the ballot.
The Trump administration’s effort “is really just one to try to sow chaos, confusion, and ideally maybe keep some enthusiastic Democrats away from the polls,” he argued.
“So, we’ll see how all this plays out. But there will be additional legal challenges. And I’m sure that the government will invade other states with subpoenas and demands as we go forward,” he added.
Cobb later predicted that the legal battles could continue well after Election Day.
“I think we’re in for a long series of contested elections and contested certifications following the election,” he said.
“But ideally, you know, this fundamental aspect of democracy,” he continued, “being able to select the people that we want to represent us, will not be corrupted the way that the president has corrupted virtually every other aspect of the rule of law.”
