Reincarnation is an idea that is hard to see at first, but once seen, it changes everything. In this conversation, philosopher Christopher Bache explains what first turned his mind around: the research of Dr. Ian Stevenson at the University of Virginia, called the Charles Darwin of reincarnation. Across some eleven books, Stevenson documented thousands of children around the world with spontaneous, verifiable memories of previous lives. For Bache it began as an intellectual encounter, and later became personal through his own inner work. So why is it so hard for many of us to see? Partly because the continuities of reincarnation are subtle, where death and birth are stark. But mostly, Bache argues, because science has become the religion of our era, wedded in its early stages to the belief that matter is all that is real and that mind is merely produced by brain, a light bulb that goes out when the brain dies. That assumption quietly rules out any parallel spiritual dimension, which is why even his own academic colleagues find it hard to look at the evidence seriously. And once seen, how does it change a life? It hinges on realizing we are not a hundred-year project tacked onto the universe's billions of years, but ancient beings who have been reincarnating for hundreds of thousands of years, part of the universe's own development. It changes your sense of identity: the ego is just one facet of the diamond the soul is. It changes how you see children, who you begin to understand as incoming souls your genetic line simply caught like a nest, so the child in your arms may be older, in soul, than you are. Paired with karma, it suggests something even more striking: that we choose the life we are born into, at a time when we knew more than we do now. Whether this life is ease or hardship, that understanding deepens our commitment to work with it, trusting a deeper intelligence behind our circumstances.
