CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten appeared shocked Tuesday by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) claiming voters in his home state of Alabama are willing to pay higher gas prices to support President Donald Trump in his costly and ongoing war on Iran.

“Wha-wha-what the heck did I just hear?!” Enten asked on “The Source with Kaitlan Collins.”

The data guru had just been shown a clip of CNN reporter Manu Raju asking Tuberville how much gas prices, which hit a national average of $4.48 per gallon Tuesday, were “hurting” his constituents, and Tuberville said, “People will deal with that.”

The GOP nominee for Alabama governor acknowledged that “obviously gas prices are high,” but told Raju that they’ve “been high before” and that his constituents voted for Trump. When asked if they’re willing to pay higher prices, the MAGA loyalist said, “Yeah, sure they are.”

“The president of the United States, his approval rating on gas prices is like 20%,” Enten told Collins. “And I don’t just mean ‘like 20%’ — it is 20%. He has the highest disapproval rating of all time of any president on gas prices.”

Enten continued, “And in polls where you ask the question, ‘Hey, you know, is the war worth the cost?’ Americans over and over again say no. The senator from Alabama is just making up stuff that is not supported by the polling data.”

A Marquette University Law School survey conducted between Sept. 2 and Sept. 9 corroborated Enten’s argument. Published last week, it showed that only 20% of the 1,023 polled U.S. adults approve of Trump on gas prices under his administration.

The cost at the pump for Americans has skyrocketed since Trump launched his unpopular war on Iran. The resulting closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil passes, has exacerbated an already dire affordability issue that Enten said is “No. 1” in the upcoming midterms.

“You want to talk about the cost of living?” he said. “The president of the United States has negative net approval ratings in the minus 60s in some polls, by far the worst numbers ever. Democrats are begging, pretty please, please, can this election be about the cost of living?”

Enten concluded, “Because if it is, then that Republican majority, not just in the House but the Senate as well, is adios, amigos. Goodbye, see you later.”
