Meet the vegan fashion and beauty brands in the US at the top of their game
It’s much easier to find vegan fashion, footwear, accessories, and cosmetics than it ever has been, and there’s lots more variety amongst them, too. If you were in any doubt about that, this round-up of vegan and cruelty-free fashion and beauty brands from the United States will convince you otherwise.
There are stylish hemp sneakers from 8000kicks that will rival anything mainstream shoe brands have to offer; affordable, vintage-inspired swim and surfwear from Do Good Surf Club; and items on the more luxury end of the scale from All We Remember, which are dyed naturally in Pennsylvania with ingredients such as chestnuts and pomegranates.
How we determine the best, more sustainable vegan brands
We’ve curated the best vegan fashion and beauty brands by checking their impact across our three ratings pillars: people, the planet, and animals. For animals, the brand must, of course, be certified as vegan, and, in the case of beauty brands, should also be cruelty-free, meaning it does not test on animals.
Unfortunately, there is currently no ban on animal testing for cosmetics in the United States, though the current government has indicated it intends to phase out some broader testing requirements. It’s also worth noting that cosmetics testing on animals is not a legal requirement in the US, as it is in some regions.
In addition to animal welfare, Good On You expects brands to also be performing well in both transparency and impact reduction across people and the planet, because taking action in only one area while ignoring other vital aspects of sustainability does not make for a more responsible business. For instance, the brand should trace at least some of its supply chain; it should be opting for lower impact materials instead of fossil-fuel-derived synthetics (which can often be used to substitute leather); ideally it ensures living wages are paid throughout the entire supply chain; and it should be taking steps to reduce waste in packaging and product design.
These are just a few of the criteria our independent ratings analysts look for, and you can find more details in our How We Rate resource.
