Adyashanti on what to do when a glimpse of awakening fades, and why the grief that follows is so common. Many people have tasted something real. A few minutes, a few hours, sometimes a few weeks where everything was clear, and then it receded. He calls these openings a foretaste. Imagine flying to a city, standing there five minutes, and flying home. You would not know the terrain, but you were still there. That the clarity has diminished does not mean what you realised was untrue. It only means it has not yet become the ground you live from. What he offers next sounds contradictory, though he calls it paradoxical. First: it is not all gone. Ask honestly whether every trace has vanished, and almost no one can say yes. It is subtler now, easy to dismiss, but there is still a perfume of it, and what we give attention to tends to grow. Second: do not try to recreate it. Do not make it the reference point for everything that follows. Which is hard, he admits, because in essence you are asking someone to let go of heaven. Underneath both is this. The first awakening arrives as a gift, unearned by merit or technique. But once it has happened the game shifts, and what was shown to you for free now costs everything to live. In the moment of revelation the letting go was done for you.
