Danny was a gang member who swore he would never set foot in Homeboy Industries. He always had a gun tucked into the front of his pants. Then his mother got pancreatic cancer. And somehow, oddly, this kid who had been tortured by this woman became her primary caregiver. Father Greg Boyle came to anoint her. She died. A week later Greg buried her. A week after that, Danny walked through the door of Homeboy for the first time. Greg watched him from his office. Watched him sweep and clean. Watched him work side by side with guys he used to shoot at. Watched him laugh. He became, Greg says, the truth of who he was. Then Danny came in and told him about the train. A packed car going east at the end of the workday. A guy hanging from a pole, a little drunk, tattoos on his hands. He looked at Danny's sweatshirt. You work there? Danny nodded. Is it any good? Danny said, it's helped me. I don't think I'll ever go back to prison because of this place. Then he reached into his pocket, pulled out a pen and a piece of paper, and wrote down the address of Homeboy from memory. He couldn't believe he knew it. He handed it to the man. Come and see us. We'll help you. The train stopped. The man got off. Danny sat down. Then he said: everyone on the train was staring at me. Everyone was nodding. Everyone was smiling. And for the first time in his life, he felt admired. The two of them sat and cried. That, Greg says, is among the truest things that can happen to a person. The blindfold removed.
