Tami Simon asks Christopher Bache what happens after the hundred billion years he has mentioned. The number is not literal, he says. What he means is that the creative intelligence of the universe has generated everything since the Big Bang, and the road ahead is vast compared to what has been realised so far. Then he says something that sets him apart from a great deal of spiritual teaching. The Vedantic tradition holds that the goal of life is to return to oneness, the drop returning to the ocean and living as ocean. He does not find that true in his experience. Individuality, and he means soul individuality specifically, is a precious gift from the Creator. When we penetrate to the depth of our being and discover our communion with all other life, he does not think the universe takes that individuality back. He thinks we are becoming, century by century, ever more empowered players in reality, physical and spiritual. That is not taken away. It is one of the great gifts of existence. His own experience is that the deeper a state of consciousness, the higher its energy, and that what we are developing through our incarnations is the strength of being to enter those states without shattering. Becoming one with God prematurely would explode us, because the differential between the divine's energy and ours is so great. But by incarnating again and again, immersing gradually, we develop a strength that lets us enter the love of God and the knowledge of God consciously and without being destroyed. He calls this the birth of the diamond soul. A soul gestated to such intensity that it can return to the deepest levels of divine reality without fragmenting. And then it makes its choices.
