Who should fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant after the sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)?

If it were up to President Donald Trump (and given the state of the modern Republican Party, it very well might be), it would be awarded to Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone.

Trump publicly backed the idea in a social media post Monday morning, saying he’d called South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R) to push Nordone’s appointment.

“This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!” Trump said.

Graham never married and had no children, but wrote in his 2015 memoir about having a very close relationship with his sister, who is nine years his junior.

Nordone declined to comment to The New York Times after her brother’s death, and it’s unclear whether she would want to fill his seat.

McMaster is expected to name a replacement to serve out the remainder of Graham’s current term sometime Monday afternoon. The state will also hold a special primary to select a new GOP nominee for November’s general election.

Graham, 71, died Saturday after developing a tear in his aorta, his office said.

The death touched off a rush of Republicans vying for the open seat. Potential candidates include Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and current South Carolina Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman.

Mace is already due to leave the House next year following a disastrous bid for the state’s governorship.
