Sir Tony Blair has secured a role advising his billionaire tech ally Larry Ellison’s $110bn (£82bn) Hollywood giant Skydance.
The former Labour prime minister has been appointed as an advisor to Skydance’s board on the back of a blockbuster merger between studios Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery.
Sir Tony’s role was confirmed late on Tuesday night after the megadeal was officially finalised.
The new Hollywood giant, rebranded as Skydance, will control a sweeping entertainment empire spanning streaming app HBO, the Harry Potter franchise, and US news channels including CNN and CBS.
The newly formed media business will be led by David Ellison, the son of tech billionaire Larry Ellison, the founder of tech giant Oracle and a close ally of US President Donald Trump.
David Ellison, Skydance’s chief executive and chairman, said: “Tony has led at the highest levels of government, respected for his intellect, strategic vision and ability to bring people together around bold, forward-looking ideas.
“His global perspective and insight will be invaluable as we turn ambition into results.”
Larry Ellison, 81, is a longtime associate of Sir Tony and has donated hundreds of millions of pounds to the former Labour leader’s think tank, the Tony Blair Institute.
While not named on the media giant’s new board, the octogenarian, who is worth an estimated $193bn (£144bn), has bankrolled his son’s attempt to reshape the Hollywood landscape with billions of pounds in funding and a $40bn (£30bn) personal guarantee.
Sir Tony was named alongside Silicon Valley royalty appointed to Skydance’s new board, including Laurene Powell Jobs, the wife of the late Steve Jobs, and Bobby Kotick, the former Activision boss.
The Skydance deal was confirmed on Tuesday after a judge in California last month approved a settlement between Paramount and a dozen US states who had threatened to block the deal on competition grounds.
