You go for a run. You make your tea. You sit down to pause and contemplate. And then you spend the whole time thinking about everything that is wrong with your life. You think you are contemplating. You are not. Richard Rudd explains the difference between pausing and actually letting something shift, and why the second one cannot be forced. The real breakthroughs, what Richard calls pivotal experiences, do not happen consciously. You cannot make them happen. They arrive in the pause, often when you least expect them, through something someone says, an animal that approaches you, a moment of unexpected magic. They come from the part of the brain, the default mode network, that needs to daydream and drift and meander. If you never allow yourself to do those things, that part of the brain cannot reach the deep wisdom of the body. And the wisdom, Richard says, is in the body. The Gene Keys are not a knowledge system you take information out of. They are a wisdom system that triggers what is already inside you to emerge from the inside out. This is why he resists the word hack entirely. Contemplation is the opposite of hacking. It is the softest, most yielding practice there is, which paradoxically makes it the quickest, because the strategic mind cannot get in there and force anything. Richard also offers a freeing instruction: put only about 10% of your attention on your shadow, the thing tripping you up, and the rest on the gift and the creativity it has been blocking.
