Asked whether she pictures herself at 95 still doing interviews and writing books, Jamie Lee Curtis gives an unexpectedly honest answer: she is not sure she wants to be doing that at all by then. What she offers instead is an idea she took from a novel. We assume a life is measured by where you went to school and what your first job was. It isn't. A life turns on a handful of seconds nobody sees coming, and you cannot know what you will decide until you are standing there. Her own example is precise. A phone rang. It was her godson, Jake Gyllenhaal, calling about his friend David Gordon Green, who wanted to make another Halloween film. It was the last thing she expected to do. What followed was three of them and a working life that opened up completely, producing, directing, writing screenplays. She offers a second example too. She once saw a photograph of Christopher Guest in a magazine and said out loud that she was going to marry him. She did. So her counsel, which she is careful not to call advice, is to stay in range of that kind of moment. Put yourself in the path of something. Nothing changes unless something changes, and a status quo is not neutral, it is stagnation and calcification, which she calls a kind of death. Which leaves the question of what she has actually shed. Her answer is disarming. The old idea she let go of is that she knows something. Chaos and messiness are human, part of life, not to be avoided. What she knows is that she does not know a great deal, and that keeps her a student.
