Asked how he personally stays aligned with what he encountered, Christopher Bache begins somewhere unexpected. He does not do that work anymore. It was, he says, a well-worn and bountiful path, and it is behind him. What occupies him now is absorbing the lessons he was given and getting them into his actual life. Twenty years after the last session, he says, he sometimes feels he is still just getting started. Integrating experiences of that order into an ordinary day is a magnificently long process. He meditates and keeps up spiritual practices. But the place he comes closest to those truths, he thinks, is in teaching. Something about other people's questions reaching him lets something loose, which opens something deeper in them, and the two move back and forth. He integrates more that way, he says, than sitting alone in silence. He is simply wired for learning collectively. On deep time, he corrects the record first: that material is in LSD and the Mind of the Universe, not Life Cycles. And he pushes back on the usual formulation. We tend to say time is linear inside space and time, and outside it there is no time at all, everything simultaneous, eternity. He finds that too simple. What he encountered instead was many modalities of time, multiple ways the universe experiences duration within itself. His first entry into deep time was personal. Across a series of sessions he experienced his entire life, beginning to end, as simultaneously present. He could meet himself as an old man while he was twenty-eight or thirty. How is that possible, he asks, and leaves the question open. Going further, he was drawn into much larger spans concerning the evolution of the species. Just as time-lapse photography lets us watch continents drift, deep time let him watch a hundred thousand years of evolution unfold in five minutes. Timelessness, in his account, sits further out still. A reality with past, present and future all simultaneously present and no time at all. Which is only one mode among others. And so to the question of time after death. There is continuity, he suggests, and action spread across something. Not linear in the way earth is linear, but coherent in a way that is temporally soaked. In the Bardo you can move between temporal modalities, dropping into deeper time before returning.
