The newspaper’s conservative editorial board slammed the proposal as nothing more than a “Hail Mary pass” from the president.

Trump “has a big tariff problem,” said the outlet, which has repeatedly slammed his widespread imposition of taxes on products imported from other countries into the United States.
Tariffs are “raising prices” for consumers, are “unpopular” and may even soon be ruled illegal by the Supreme Court, it noted.

“We’ve advised Mr. Trump from the beginning that tariffs would do economic harm, and so they are,” said the Journal. “They’re also doing political damage to the GOP, which is why he’s floating rebates that contradict his other tariff claims.”
