Although temperatures are expected to cool off slightly over this weekend, weather forecasting models suggest yet another heatwave is on the cards next week.

Met Office forecasters say temperatures should drop to 28C in southern areas tomorrow and 24C in northern regions. Peak temperatures on Sunday are expected to be around 26C in the south and 24C in the north.

Not only will this break a 13-day streak of consecutive 30C days, it also means temperatures may finally drop below the heatwave threshold – bringing the UK’s third heatwave of 2026 to an end.

An official heatwave is declared when temperatures surpass the heatwave threshold for three consecutive days. The threshold varies from 28C in the south-east – where temperatures tend to be warmer – to 25C the further away from the south-east you are.

The GFS weather model suggests a fourth heatwave of the year could be right around the corner. The data shows temperatures possibly surging to 30C or 31C in western areas next Friday, with the mercury climbing to 29C as far north as Yorkshire.

Maps for Saturday next week show potential 33C highs in the south of England, with parts of Wales – close to the England border – possibly reaching 29C or 30C. The Midlands and East Anglia could surge as high as 32C.

The warmest conditions are expected on Sunday next week. The GFS model shows potential highs of 35C or 36C right across southern and central England, stretching from Gloucestershire to East Anglia. Wales and northern England could hit 33C or 34C.

The following Monday also looks set to be a warm day, with data showing highs of 33C are possible in eastern England and South Yorkshire. The north-west could reach 31C.

Temperature anomaly maps for this period show the UK – particularly England and Wales – shaded in areas of dark red. This indicates that temperatures are expected to rise well above the seasonal average.

In total, the GFS weather model shows 16 counties could see temperatures of 35C or more next week. They are all in England.
