The Government has today taken its next step towards allowing driverless vehicles onto Britain’s roads from 2027 with the launch of a consultation to help ‘shape the framework in which self-driving technology is safely introduced’.
It says it will have open dialogue with road users, industry, and disability groups to seek feedback on how autonomous tech can help ‘transform travel’ and ‘strengthen road safety’, as well as provide transport solutions for older people, those with disabilities and vulnerable groups.
Minsters are also eager to accelerate the use of driverless systems and introduce an Automated Vehicle (AV) Act to ‘unlock new opportunities for businesses to transform how people and goods move across the country’.
The consultation comes as major question marks remain around the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles on our roads.
There too needs to be clarification of where liability lies if a crash occurs, especially if there is a collision with a human driver or other road user.
And given the recent spate of cyber attacks on businesses in 2025, fears remain around how vulnerable the technology could be to hackers.
