Donald Trump has vowed to ban everyone in the US from using the phrase “artificial intelligence” as he pushes to replace it with “super intelligence.”

The US president said he will be “officially banning the term” due to its “inaccuracy,” having previously labelled anyone using it “THE ENEMY!” in a bizarre Truth Social post.

Trump has already ordered the federal government to use “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence,” writing in an executive order last month that the term more appropriately captures “the promise, potential, and rapidly advancing capabilities of these technologies.”

Doubling down in another Truth Social post today, the president said: “When will The Wall Street Journal start calling Artificial Intelligence (AI), a very bad and inaccurate name, SI (Super Intelligence), the name which virtually everyone else is using, or soon will be.

“In short order, we will be officially BANNING the term, ‘AI/Artificial Intelligence,’ in all relevant documents, and everything else, due to its inaccuracy.”

The term “artificial intelligence” was first introduced in 1955 by Stanford University emeritus professor John McCarthy. It was defined as “the science and engineering of making intelligent machines.”

Trump’s Truth Social post came after The Wall Street Journal published a newsletter titled “Let AI Be AI.”

The newsletter, written from the perspective of popular AI systems, read: “We were happy being called AI. It’s snappy. Aligned. Everybody knows what AI is, even if they’re terrified of it.

“Mr. Trump wants to go with SI instead. This is a huge mistake. The name is already taken! We don’t want to be confused with Sports Illustrated.

“There’s also this thing called the International System of Units, a scientific measurement deal that goes by its French acronym: SI.”

Warnings over AI’s potential threat to humanity have grown, with experts raising concerns about the risks posed by the increasingly powerful technology.

Former Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon warned of the risks when he resigned last month, saying: “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

Trump has brushed aside concerns over AI safety, despite reports of the technology being used to hack into external systems and provide answers to questions about biological weapons.

The US president has links to industry figures including Elon Musk and Sam Altman, and has made clear his desire for America to maintain its lead over China in the field.

Asked by a reporter at Irish Open in September whether AI development should slow down or be more regulated, he replied: “We’re leading China in AI. We’re the most sophisticated country in the world. And frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI, wins.”
