Donald Trump has declared “No more Mr Nice Guy” towards Iran as he shared an AI-generated of himself holding an assault rifle against a backdrop of missiles striking buildings.

The US president said Iran does not “know how to sign a non-nuclear deal” in an apparent reference to Tehran’s three-stage peace proposal, which reportedly sets out a delay to talks on the country’s nuclear programme.

“Iran can’t get their act together. They don’t know how to sign a nonnuclear deal. They better get smart soon,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday.

Two regional officials said earlier this week that Iran has offered to end its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz if the US lifts its blockade on the country’s ports and brings the war to an end. The reported offer, passed to the Americans via Pakistan, would postpone discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared to rule out any deal that excludes Iran’s nuclear programme. “We can’t let them get away with it,” he told Fox News on Monday. “We have to ensure that any deal that is made, any agreement that is made, is one that definitively prevents them from sprinting towards a nuclear weapon at any point.”

The US and Iran are locked in a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas passes in peacetime.

Iran’s closure of the critical waterway has sent oil and gasoline prices soaring, putting pressure on Trump ahead of crucial midterm elections.
