President Donald Trump couldn’t help himself by taking one more dig at Lindsey Graham just a day after the senator’s death was announced.

“Now he had one bad moment, and that was, you know, in the January 6 thing when he stood up: ‘All right, now I’ve had it, that’s it, I can’t do it anymore,’” Trump said Monday on Fox News. “Then he called me about 40 minutes later and said, ‘Did I really say that? I can’t believe it.’ And he took it back. So I give him a 99 instead of 100.”

Trump called in to Fox News on Monday morning to remember Graham, saying the South Carolina Republican could help him solve problems on both sides of the aisle, had fun with politics and was good at it. But of course, at some point during the conversation, Trump reminded the Fox News hosts that Graham also ran for president in 2016 before dropping out early on. He said the two were friends after that, minus the “one bad moment,” which was Graham speaking out against Trump after the 2021 insurrection.

Shortly after the rioters were cleared from the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, Graham stood up and announced that he was done with Trump.

“Trump and I, we’ve had a hell of a journey. I hate it being this way. Oh my God, I hate it. From my point of view, he’s been a consequential president,” Graham said. “But today, first thing you’ll see... all I can say is count me out. Enough is enough.”

But just four months later, Graham publicly walked back his statement, saying America couldn’t move forward without Trump.

“I’ve determined we can’t grow without him,” he said.

Trump said Monday on Fox News that he “had nothing to do” with the Jan. 6 insurrection but was “proud” to give everyone involved a pardon.

Graham and Trump have a storied past. Graham, a lifelong Republican, was at one point critical of Trump and his run for the presidency, calling him a “jackass” and “unfit for office.” And Trump hated Graham so much at one point that he read Graham’s phone number out loud to an audience of hundreds at a South Carolina rally. But when Trump won in 2016, Graham had a change of heart, sticking by his side and becoming one of his allies and advisers.

Graham died Saturday night at the age of 71. His office said his death was caused by a “brief and sudden illness,” and the medical examiner’s office said a preliminary exam revealed he had died of aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
