President Donald Trump went on a lengthy social media tirade on Monday against a Texas congressman he pardoned last year.

“Nobody knows Henry Cuellar better than Donald J. Trump,” the president wrote on Truth Social. “I studied his records, learned about his financing, and listened to his two wonderful daughters beg me to help the mother and father that they love. Their letters were heart wrenching and beautiful, but their father had problems that nobody could solve but me, and the daughters very correctly and respectfully knew that.”

Trump added that he never assumed Cuellar would run for office again, but “certainly not as a Democrat,” hinting that the pardon may have been an attempt by the president to shore up the GOP’s narrow majority in the House.

He also called Cuellar “a weak and incompetent version of me.”

Trump pardoned both Cuellar and his wife, Imelda, who were indicted in 2024 on charges of bribery, money laundering and conspiracy. His post on Monday included a copy of the pardon request that Cuellar’s daughters sent.

At the time, Trump explained his pardon was a way of combating a “weaponized” prosecution. Cuellar had aligned with the president on several issues, including criticizing President Joe Biden’s immigration policy.

It’s unclear exactly why Trump chose Monday to attack Cuellar, but it was likely a way to promote Republican Tano Tijerina, his preferred candidate for Congress in Texas’ 28th District. However, Trump’s rant may have also been triggered by Cuellar’s earlier post on Monday, demanding an investigation into a fatal ICE-involved shooting in Maine.

Trump similarly blasted Cuellar for “Such a lack of LOYALTY,” following the pardon when the congressman announced he would seek reelection as a Democrat, dashing any hopes the president had of a party switch.
