Speaking at the G20 finance ministers meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, Bessent warned that persistent global trade imbalances are undermining prosperity and argued that countries need to address the flow of Chinese exports into their markets. The push comes as China continues to face economic challenges, including a prolonged housing crisis, high youth unemployment and weak consumer spending. Bessent says greater international pressure could encourage Beijing to rebalance its economy and rely more on domestic demand rather than exports. Meanwhile, countries including Brazil, Mexico and members of the European Union have taken steps to increase tariffs or trade restrictions on Chinese products.
