Leah Lamb was in a recording studio in New York, working on a series about sacred storytelling, when she got the news: the fire was at the bottom of her street in Topanga Canyon. She turned off her phone and kept recording. By the time the fires reached the canyon, there were no fire trucks left. The palisades and Malibu were already burning. No resources were coming. What happened next in Topanga is one of the most extraordinary stories of community in action. Within hours, residents had mapped every pool in the canyon for water access, created their own homemade fire brigade, built emergency communication systems through the local library, and organised evacuation support through WhatsApp. The people who needed to get out of the way did. The people who needed to act did. Everyone got in their lane for what they were actually good at. And then there were two neighbours on the block who had not spoken civilly in years. When the fire came, they stayed. Together they called in the fire brigade at the exact moment it mattered and saved the canyon from burning entirely.
