It Targets a Whole Coronavirus Family
The vaccine is designed against Sarbecoviruses, a group that includes SARS-CoV-2, the original SARS virus and related coronaviruses circulating in bats.
Instead of focusing only on a currently dominant variant, it aims to prepare the immune system for shared features found across many members of the virus family.
Artificial Intelligence Designed the Active Component
Researchers analysed genetic sequence data collected from Sarbecoviruses through surveillance programmes worldwide. Machine learning identified antigen features that remained common across the group.
Those conserved features were combined into a synthetic “super-antigen.” Cambridge says this is the first human-tested vaccine whose active component was designed entirely through computer simulations.
The First Human Trial Included 39 Volunteers
The Phase 1 trial involved 39 healthy adults aged between 18 and 50. Participants were recruited at NIHR clinical research facilities in Cambridge and Southampton.
The study was sponsored by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, with its results published in the Journal of Infection in May 2026.
The Vaccine Passed Its Initial Safety Test
Researchers reported that the experimental vaccine was safe and well tolerated, with no significant side effects identified during the small early-stage trial.
That result supports further testing, but it does not establish safety across older adults, children, pregnant people or those with underlying medical conditions.
