I have been a Reiki Master for about seven years and operate an in-home Reiki studio. Initially, I was cautious about allowing my cats into the treatment room due to allergy concerns. However, over the past year, they have become an integral part of my healing sessions.

A Transformative Encounter

Approximately a year ago, I welcomed a new client who was later revealed to be battling breast cancer. As I closed the door and began our session, my youngest male cat, Bowzer, persistently scratched and meowed at the door. I apologized to my client, but she insisted on letting him in. The moment she saw Bowzer, she burst into tears, sharing that he reminded her of her childhood cat. This marked the start of his role in our Reiki sessions.

Bowzer jumped onto the table, instinctively moving towards her right breast—the location of her cancer—and settled beside her. His soothing purring provided her with immense comfort. I asked if she was okay with him lying there, and she enthusiastically agreed. As the session ended, he hopped down beside the table and gazed up at her, as if he had a message to convey.

When she reached down to pet him, Bowzer looked over at me, seeking acknowledgment for his contribution to the session.

The Healing Power of Animal Reiki

In Animal Reiki, cats are regarded as teachers who remind us of the significance of being present and embracing healing energy. My next client had a similar experience with Bowzer. As he lay next to her during the session, she felt more at ease and was able to release her tension. She began to pet him, remarking that his purring was helping her relax. Having recently lost a loved one, she sought Reiki to mend her heart. During the session, Bowzer positioned himself right on her chest—she looked up at me and exclaimed, “He’s healing me!”

I continued the Reiki session, and when it concluded, he jumped off the bed. She thanked both of us and, as he stared at her for a moment before walking away, she mentioned how relaxed she felt and expressed interest in having him join her for her next session.

Reflection on Healing and Allergies

What I realized was that Bowzer was providing comfort to both clients during their sessions while Reiki facilitated the movement of stagnant energy, flowing where it was needed for each of them. While I cherish these experiences, some clients are allergic to cats, requiring deep cleaning of the room and the house afterward. Overall, I must admit that having him by my side during sessions has brought great joy to my clients.
