Tami Simon asks whether technology could be used to amplify the interior life rather than erode it. D.W. Pasulka is optimistic. It can go either way, she says, and her own teaching over video is an example of it going well. But she is direct about the cost. A whole generation has had its brain rewired by how it uses these tools. Reading on a screen produces different comprehension than reading on paper, attention is affected, and used without reflection, it is not good. Asked what the secret forces guiding human destiny in her book's title actually are, she gives an answer with nothing conspiratorial in it. The secret forces are technology. She tells the story from Plato's Phaedrus, where Socrates refuses to read a speech and makes Phaedrus recite it, because Socrates was against writing. If you write things down, he argued, you will not remember them, and he was right. Oral cultures memorised entire bodies of work and generations of family history. The forces are secret because every new technology gets used in ways nobody foresaw, and those uses change us before we notice. On what the new human might become, she says we are going through our own bioreactor of change and she cannot imagine what people will be like in twenty years. Devices are already reshaping how we think, and what worries her is thinking that runs in a loop with the machine. Which is why she keeps returning to a phrase: cognitive sovereignty. Historically you could be physically imprisoned and still have a free mind. Her concern is that this may stop being true. So she offers something small and deliberate. Take a walk. Look around.
