At the moment of conception, the egg produces a flash of red light known as a zinc spark. Later, there is a zinc wave of gold. This is apparently true of all vertebrates.

Our first mouth is the navel. Through the umbilical cord, we receive everything we need from our mother, along with her hormones. Does she feel safe? Or? Do we feel welcome? Rejected? Feared? This helps prepare us for the world we’ll be entering. Should we be developing the forebrain or the musculature?

Our birth is a series of early traumas. We lose the warm cocoon of our mother’s belly. We have to start breathing. For years, they held the baby upside down and slapped them. They cut our cord, often while we still feed from it and haven’t started breathing yet. We also have to learn a new way to feed. And boys are often circumcised.

This combination is our first separation. With luck, we’ll soon be back with the mother, hearing her voice, her heartbeat and her breath again. Soon enough, our job will be separating and becoming our own person. But that’s easier if we feel secure.
