Solar technology has advanced significantly since the first laboratory demonstrations. Solar devices that were initially used to power isolated telephone systems can today provide enough electricity to charge a laptop on a camping table or run a router during a storm.

These developments have important implications for people preparing for power outages, pursuing an off-grid lifestyle, or trying to reduce the environmental impact of their energy use. This paper outlines the evolution of small-scale solar power, reviews scientific research on the advantages and disadvantages of these systems, and provides guidance on assessing the validity of product advertisements.

From Phone Lines to Backpacks

Solar energy began as a specialized application. Bell Labs scientists created a silicon solar cell in 1954 that demonstrated an estimated efficiency of six percent. The purpose of this development was to provide reliable power to telephone systems located in remote areas where conventional battery technology was unreliable.

It took decades to make progress. Research and development have pushed commercial silicon cell efficiencies to roughly 25 – 26%. Our N-type panels reach 25.6%, still short of silicon’s practical ceiling of about 29%.

Why Small Systems Now Make Sense

As costs change, households are able to purchase different items. The International Renewable Energy Agency has reported that installation costs for utility-scale solar decreased by 87% from 2010 to 2024. Additionally, battery storage costs dropped by 93%. Although these decreases apply to large installations, the trends for residential applications would be similar. It is apparent that power generation, which used to require a rooftop, an installation professional, and financing, may now be portable.

How the Hardware Changed

Modern folding panels have many of the same cell types as rooftop solar panels. Most of the difference comes from the way they are packaged. There are several different types of formats used today such as: folding panels with stands; soft blankets; rigid kits; and bifacial panels that can collect light reflected on the back. Shoppers who compare portable solar panels will see each of these formats.

Bifacial panels also collect light reflected onto the rear side. Under ideal, high-albedo conditions, the theoretical rear-side gain can reach up to 30%. In tracked field systems, NREL reports 4 –15% (9% on average), depending on module type and ground surface, so real-world gains are generally below the theoretical maximum.

Resilience When the Grid Fails

Outage data shows why backup power draws interest. The U.S. Energy Information Administration found that the average American customer lost power for about 11 hours in 2024, nearly twice the yearly average of the previous decade. Major events, led by Hurricanes Beryl, Helene, and Milton, caused about 80 percent of those hours. Outages without a major event behind them averaged about two hours.

Backup power also raises a safety question. After Hurricane Katrina, CDC investigators found that 50 of 51 reported carbon monoxide poisoning cases involved generators. NPR reported in 2021 that at least 39 people had died of generator-related carbon monoxide poisoning after hurricanes since 2017. A battery and solar setup makes no exhaust at the point of use, which removes that hazard. Households should still follow the maker’s directions. The National Hurricane Center also advises battery-backed carbon monoxide alarms wherever generators run.

Where It Fits and Where It Does Not

Compact solar suits cabins, tiny homes, backyard studios, camper vans, boats, campsites, and home emergency kits. It handles small loads well, such as phone and laptop charging, lights, a router, fans, and in larger systems, a small refrigerator. Most compact systems cannot run central air conditioning or electric heating.

Plan around your loads. Panel watts tell you how fast a battery can charge. Battery watt-hours tell you how long gear can run. Ratings come from lab test conditions, and real output shifts with sun angle, cloud, heat, and dirt.

A simple example shows the math. A 500 watt-hour battery can run a 10-watt LED light for about 50 hours in theory, or charge a typical phone many times. Add a 100-watt panel in good sun, and you may recover a few hundred watt-hours in a day. Real numbers vary, so treat any estimate as a range.

Counting the Footprint

Footprints deserve attention too. The International Energy Agency’s Photovoltaic Power Systems Programme estimates 25.2 to 43.6 grams of CO2 equivalent per kilowatt-hour of solar electricity, compared with up to 1 kilogram for fossil fuel generators. Nearly all of the emissions come from manufacturing. That makes lifespan important. Buy durable gear, repair it when possible, and recycle panels and batteries at end of life.

Choosing With Care

Compare specifications from multiple manufacturers. Verify the limits of both the voltage and current with the input of your power station. Also check the type of connectors used, the weight of each panel, the panel’s weather rating, and the duration of the panel’s warranty. Test reviews from independent sources will also be useful. Retailers such as zoupw.com provide a way to search for panels based on the brand of power station that they are compatible with. This can help you to easily find the correct panel for your specific power station. Always refer to the user manual for your power station to verify compatibility.

What Comes Next

Laboratory work is moving past silicon’s limits. Perovskite on silicon tandem cells have passed 33 percent efficiency in tests certified by NREL, and one 2026 report claimed 35.5 percent. These cells are not yet common in consumer gear, and long-term durability still needs proof. The nearer gains are simpler. Efficient homes, modest solar and storage, and a written outage plan make households more resilient. Compact solar will not replace the grid. It can keep lights, communication, and food safe when the grid fails, without exhaust.
