A 5,500-year-old child mummy from Libya's Akakos Mountains challenges Egypt as the birthplace of African mummification. In this documentary, Italian archaeologist Dr. Savino Delirnya pursues the story of Juan Mahujaj, the tiny mummified boy found in a rock shelter that erosion had opened. Placed in a fetal position inside an antelope-skin sack and insulated with leaves, he was preserved for millennia. Carbon dating pegged him at 5,500 years old, and analysis by Dr. Giorgio Manzi confirmed he was about two and a half years at death. Ritual and belief emerge in stone circles on the Mesak, where cattle were slaughtered and selected bones interred, pointing to an early cattle cult that recalls later Egyptian temple offerings. Nearby petroglyphs include human figures with dog masks, foreshadowing Anubis by at least a millennium. Pottery bearing distinctive Saharan wave-impressed decoration appears across a vast zone from Libya to Niger and then, around 6,000 years ago, in the southern Nile Valley, suggesting contact as the desert dried and people or ideas moved east. As Sir David Mattingly observes, the Sahara's many small lights may have helped illuminate the Nile.
