Spirit Guides: Are You Getting Their Message?
By Katherine Marie
Something I have noticed while talking to people new to the topic of spirit guides and making connections is the expectation that signs and messages will be loud and easy to understand. Unfortunately, things don’t always go that way. In fact, I have found the opposite to be true. There are no booming voices or blinking neon arrows. Instead, the nudges are subtle, quiet, and sometimes easy to miss. This is because they are woven into everyday life and tend to show up when and where you least expect. Luckily, with practice and patience, and sometimes even a little research, the messages from your spirit guides can become much clearer. Best of all, it doesn’t take psychic abilities, but rather an open mind and the willingness to pay attention to the little things so often overlooked. Not getting the message you think your spirit guides are sending? Here are two quick strategies to help.
Create Moments of Quiet
The number one thing that throws static on the line between you and your spirit guides is noise. Yes, external noise is a factor, but I’m speaking more about internal noise. The average person in today’s world is constantly bombarded with information. Good or bad, the news is distracting and demands our attention. Even when we close our eyes, our thoughts continue to process all the data accumulated throughout the day. The constant churn and state of distraction is what I mean by internal noise, and it is more than loud enough to block any communication your spirit guides are trying to send. So, how do you combat this? Purposely create moments of quiet.
When I say “moment,” I literally mean as short as thirty seconds. You don’t need to climb a mountain top and sit cross-legged for three hours in deep meditation to make a connection with your spirit guides. Although being able to do that is very impressive, for me and most people I know, carving out even ten minutes to sit quietly in a special space is daunting enough. And don’t think the moments have to be spent in formal meditation. You can go for a walk, ideally in some sort of nature setting, and direct your focus outward to take in your surroundings. Another option is journaling. Sneaking away for a few minutes with a notebook and your favorite pen to do a little writing can be a very powerful way to quiet things down and open up channels with your spirit guides. Even something as simple as going through the motions of making and then enjoying a cup of tea can settle the static enough to help messages get through to you. These all give your mind permission to slow down and create space for subtle signs of guidance.
Be Specific with Your Questions
All the moments of quiet in the world won’t help you get a clear message from your spirit guides if you haven’t started the conversation with a specific question. Although your spirit guides will periodically send signs that you are loved and not alone (such as by placing a bird feather in your path or a hummingbird outside your window), if you’re looking for something more precise, it’s only fair to your spirit guides that you actually ask for it. They don’t feel put off by a direct request. In fact, they appreciate having clear direction. Rather than saying “Spirit Guides, what do I need to know?” try something more like “Spirit Guides, should I pursue this new job?” or “Spirit Guides, is this new person I met yesterday good for me?” You can even go so far as to include the sign you will be looking for in response. For example, you are absolutely allowed to create a moment of quiet in front of your altar, or in your car before you drive off to work, or even for sixty seconds locked in the bathroom and say out loud or in your head, “Spirit Guides, send me a sign in the form of an owl if pursuing this opportunity is for my highest good.” Then, and here is the very hardest part, let it go.
Most of us struggle with the waiting. I know I do. It’s easy to ask for a sign and then expect an immediate answer. We start scanning every tree branch, billboard, or social media post hoping for an owl. That is not going to work. Your spirit guides will answer when the timing is right, and the best you can do is go about your day. The sign will occur as part of your normal activities, but often in a completely unexpected place. Maybe you will see an owl on the cover of a book, or spelled out on a license plate, or you’ll overhear someone in line at the grocery store mentioning seeing an owl while on a walk. Equally important is staying open to the possibility that there will be no clear answer and that you will instead get a subtle response, usually more like a feeling than a sign, letting you know now is not the time.
There is one thing I can promise: communicating with your spirit guides gets easier over time. Even by using these two simple techniques of quieting the noise through moments of quiet and being specific with your questions, you will start to recognize the signs and feel the nudges being sent your way. Most importantly, do not worry if you miss something. Your spirit guides are infinitely patient, and if something is truly important, they will send a follow-up sign. If one method doesn’t work, they find a different way to get your attention. Your job is to stay open, remain curious, and trust that the communication is happening, even if you’re still learning the best ways to get the message.
