On Wednesday, Carlton Johnson II opened fire inside his downtown high-rise. Two men are dead. Three Minneapolis officers are wounded.

The far-left county attorney who declined to take him off the street is the same prosecutor. The Gateway Pundit has been warning about for years.

Carlton Neal Johnson II, 35, opened fire Wednesday afternoon at the Shoreline Plaza apartment building in downtown Minneapolis, according to authorities.

Investigators said the rampage began outside the building during a child-custody exchange. Johnson allegedly shot a woman believed to be the mother of his child before shooting two building employees.

Johnson then traveled to the ninth floor, where he fatally shot two residents before being killed during an exchange of gunfire with police.

Two Minneapolis police officers were struck by gunfire, one in the leg and another twice in the abdomen. A third officer suffered other injuries. All three officers are expected to recover.

The child involved in the custody exchange was not injured.

But Johnson’s violent outburst did not come without warning.

Court records connected to an eviction case describe months of threatening and increasingly erratic behavior, according to Alpha News.

Johnson allegedly assaulted a resident on March 23.

On June 11, he reportedly walked through the apartment complex openly displaying a firearm, entered the management office with the weapon visible, and told other residents that he had obtained a new gun and “would kill someone.”

Two days later, Johnson allegedly flashed the gun at people outside the building.

On June 19, he reportedly made additional threatening statements about using a firearm and lifted his shirt to show the weapon to a security officer.

Then, on June 25, Johnson allegedly threatened one resident with the firearm and pointed it at another resident in a common area. Police were called, but Johnson allegedly confronted staff members and attempted to discover who had reported him.

Despite the disturbing allegations, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty’s office declined to prosecute Johnson, WCCO Radio reported.

According to Moriarty, police reported that Johnson possessed a valid permit to carry and that the weapon “did not leave his waistband.”

Moriarty claimed prosecutors found “insufficient evidence to prove a charge beyond a reasonable doubt.”

“On June 25, Minneapolis Police responded to a call about Carlton Johnson displaying a firearm to another individual,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty shared.

“MPD conducted further investigation and determined Mr. Johnson, who had a legal permit to carry, displayed the weapon but it did not leave his waistband. MPD submitted a case to HCAO on Aug. 20, which was quickly reviewed by an experienced attorney in accordance with established protocol. It was determined that the case likely could not be charged due to insufficient evidence to prove a charge beyond a reasonable doubt. The HCAO also flagged the conduct for Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) screening. Additional review found insufficient evidence to proceed with petitioning for an ERPO on the June 25 incident.”

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, Moriarty has repeatedly faced criticism over her soft-on-crime prosecutorial policies.

In 2025, the Trump Justice Department launched an investigation into Moriarty’s policy directing prosecutors to consider defendants’ race and age during plea negotiations.

The Gateway Pundit also reported that Moriarty’s office declined to criminally charge a Tim Walz administration employee accused of causing approximately $20,000 in damage by keying multiple Teslas. Her office instead placed him in a diversion program.

Yet Moriarty has aggressively pursued law-enforcement officers, including filing felony charges against ICE agents involved in incidents during federal immigration operations.

Minnesotans deserve to know why an armed man accused of assaulting residents, threatening to kill someone, intimidating apartment employees, and brandishing a handgun did not face charges before his alleged threats became a deadly reality.

The warning signs were there.

The residents saw them. Building management documented them. Police responded to them.

But Mary Moriarty’s office did not charge him.

Now two people are dead.
