We conducted science experiments that fired radio signals up in to deep space, in hopes that the signal may be picked up by an advanced civilization which may at some point reply. These were the first purposeful ventures by Man to place himself outside the Earth.
Radio waves have the ability to travel huge distances without any significant interference. They thought that they would provide the most accessible means to broadcast greetings, scientific data and information about humankind into the universe.
The Arecibo Observatory is famous for being a source of one of the most popular transmissions of an interstellar message. It included encrypted data on Earth, human bodies, maths and humanity’s place in the Milky Way galaxy.
Stephen Hawking thought it might be hazardous to engage in contact with other civilisations. An advanced species might not have human values so direct communication could be a risky affair for Earth, he suggested.
Hawking said that the possibility of a meeting with aliens are comparable to what has happened on Earth with different civilisations. He claimed that there was much to be gained by the technologically advanced societies over the underdeveloped ones.
Many scientists are in favor of waking up slowly by only detecting natural or artificial signals from space instead of trying to broadcast messages, to “catch” substantive evidence before humanity makes itself known.
The world’s telescopes are still searching the skies for strange radio waves, radio patterns, that don’t have a natural origin. The latter still forms an important component of the quicker-and-sooner search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
It is possible to note that the Earth has been broadcasting radio and television signals for decades, some scientists claim. These transmissions have been sent to outer space and our own world might well be detectable from far away.
