As artificial intelligence accelerates across the British economy, billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that only three professions are currently safe from automation.
This warning coincides with domestic graduate employment dropping to record lows. Gates asserts that coders, energy experts, and biologists hold the only skill sets complex enough to withstand the sweeping technological shift.
The assessment from the software developer, worth approximately £86.1 billion ($109.3 billion), arrives as the UK job market touches a five-year low. With entry-level positions plummeting, financial analysts warn that the next generation of workers faces a difficult recruitment landscape.
The AI Shield and the Graduate Market
Domestic hiring cooled throughout late 2025 and early 2026. According to the employment platform Adzuna, total job vacancies recently fell by a further three per cent in a single month to 694,000. This represents a 19 per cent plunge over a six-month period, pushing the market close to levels last seen during the global pandemic.
Gates maintains that machine learning systems currently lack the capacity for complex problem-solving, creative intuition, and strategic decision-making. The 70-year-old technology magnate suggests the global job market is evolving in unpredictable ways, though the immediate fallout for younger workers is already visible in the recruitment data.
Andrew Hunter of Adzuna stated that the fall in graduate roles suggests the wider market remains far from stable. However, he noted isolated signs of resilience, with wages continuing to outpace inflation and sustained demand in sectors such as teaching and domestic cleaning proving that employer appetite has not vanished entirely.
