As our deeply troubled world plunges from one crisis to another, it is very helpful to remember three most important features of the present day world and its future.

• The first extremely important feature of present day world is that it is a non-sustainable world characterized by multiple injustices which cause high levels of avoidable distress and stress in many ways. The existing power-structures inflict many sided injustices and use the earth’s resources in highly destructive ways, ultimately leading to a situation in which the earth’s basic life-nurturing conditions are badly threatened by serious environmental problems as well as highly destructive weapons and wars. If these extremely serious distortions of the existing world are not corrected in time, distress and stress will continue to increase in many ways and ultimately the basic life nurturing conditions will be seriously eroded and lost in many possible ways, this process being possibly spread over decades, perhaps even over centuries, or perhaps ending very rapidly within days, perhaps weeks, in big bang conditions, all related to man-made factors.
• The most credible way of avoiding this destruction is for the entire world to agree to adopt a path broadly based on the precepts of justice and equality, peace and harmony, protection of environment and biodiversity, in turn linked closely to the protection of basic life nurturing conditions of earth and thereby resolving the SURVIVAL crisis (to remember easily, this writer has been using the abbreviation of JEPPS for this path).
• One essential pre-condition for the ability to save life-nurturing conditions is to agree to a future without wars and without weapons of mass destruction. While this is of the highest importance in itself, this is also important for creating those conditions of international cooperation in which various other essential tasks of protecting environment, reducing disasters and establishing justice and rules based world systems can be accomplished. If huge injustices of the present-day world have to be effectively removed without war, this also implies that there must be a great surge of non-violent and peaceful actions against the present-day serious injustices and distortions as well as future dangers. 

While some may say that this presentation of the present day realities and future possibilities is an oversimplification of the present day complex realities as well as equally complex future challenges, it is nevertheless useful and important to present a basic and simple formulation of the admittedly highly complicated situation so that the most basic features as well as challenges of the world can be revealed in very stark terms. 

In fact more detailed work along these lines will only go to further confirm the fact that humanity has reached a very critical stage of its history in which very basic choices have to be made regarding whether at all we are going to leave a reasonably safe world for the next generation and those to follow, or whether we are on the path of condemning future generations to dangers and destruction not yet seen at any other time due to human made factors and circumstances. Clearly with the kind of weapons the humanity has and wants to increase, and with the kind of very serious environmental problems we have created, we are headed for times potentially much more destructive than the previous two world wars. Hence it is clearly a very important time of history for humanity to assert with the highest conviction and sincerity—no more destruction, the future is only for protection, for us and our children and for their children, and for all forms of life.
