What do you do when you are afraid and acting from fear seems like the only option? Paul Selig says he does not want to answer that one as Paul, and goes to the guides instead. What they offer is a distinction worth carrying. The fear you have accrued, they say, is mostly historical data. Seeing a panther on the road and getting out of the way is not necessarily an act of fear. Shunning your neighbour because you heard terrible things about her is. The difference is between responding to what is actually in front of you and being directed by what you inherited. And when fear is your director, you compound the evidence for it until the field around you becomes dense with it. That density, they suggest, is the world most of us have been navigating. The upper room does not hold that pollution, which is why the invitation is to align there instead. The moment you release the need to be afraid in order to feel protected, you begin to elect different choices. There is always another opportunity to align with something other, or higher, or simply different. As long as you believe you should be afraid, you will enact fear, and you may fight your neighbour or fight a country, all of it born from a belief in separation, which is itself the action of fear. Then Paul speaks in his own voice about the clearing process, and he is candid about it. He does not experience this work the way a reader does, because the words come through him, which he finds more confounding rather than less. He describes having lived in a dark room in his youth and the strangeness of moving into a lit one, since when you are used to a cave the prospect of being flooded with light can make you want to retreat further back. He is living a life now he could never have imagined. His image for clearing is perfect. It is like pouring clean water into a glass with silt at the bottom. The silt rises to the surface on its way out, and that is precisely why you see it. Here is that belief, here is that fear, here is what I do with it. He would be lying to say he feels finished, and he is openly suspicious of people who announce themselves as enlightened, since anyone who genuinely was would be too busy doing their work to mention it. What has changed for him is not a new identity but a different experience of himself, a presence in being. And he is clear that none of this is spiritual bypassing.
