Former Democratic National Committee vice chair David Hogg has resurfaced in the political arena, this time supporting Aftyn Behn, a liberal candidate aiming to flip Tennessee’s historically conservative 7th Congressional District. Behn, often referred to as the “AOC of Tennessee,” symbolizes a new wave of progressive leadership, which Hogg believes is crucial for the Democratic Party’s future.

During a recent rally in Nashville, Hogg energized a crowd of young Democrats, emphasizing the importance of youth turnout in this election. “This seat is super, super youth-centric,” he declared, urging young voters to reject the status quo. Hogg’s message reflects a growing sentiment within the party that to reclaim lost territory, particularly in conservative regions, the Democrats must appeal to a younger base ready to actively participate in the electoral process.

Hogg’s own journey has been marked by a desire for reform and radical change. Recently, he launched a $20 million initiative through his PAC, Leaders We Deserve, to propel younger candidates into the spotlight. This plan includes challenging older incumbents he deems ineffective. His exit from the DNC earlier this year came after internal party conflicts, indicating a schism within the party between youthful progressives and seasoned officials.

At the core of Behn’s platform is her opposition to the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a piece of legislation she criticized as a massive transfer of wealth from the working class to the elite. A professional social worker and community organizer, Behn brings a fresh perspective to a district that has not seen a Democratic representative in many years. Her activism mirrors the approach of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, utilizing social media to engage voters and spread her message widely.

Backing Behn’s campaign, DNC Chair Ken Martin recently visited Tennessee to promote her agenda, which includes lowering healthcare costs and aggressively pursuing transparency in political dealings. Behn’s campaign hinges on appealing to a younger, more progressive electorate that seeks change in the wake of what they perceive as detrimental policies favored by Republican counterparts.

Van Epps, the Republican nominee for the seat, is endorsed by high-profile figures, including President Trump, adding further intrigue to the race. This contrast between Behn’s progressive messages and Van Epps’s traditional Republican backing illustrates the broader national battle unfolding in American politics.

Hogg’s participation in this campaign highlights not just a local race but also the Democrats’ ongoing struggle to consolidate their base across various factions. The upcoming special election on December 2 serves as a critical juncture for both parties in Tennessee, particularly for a Democratic establishment seeking revitalization in a state often characterized by its conservative leanings.

As the campaign progresses, all eyes will be on this district to see if the voices of young Democrats can truly make a difference in a deep-red territory.
