Conservative channel Newsmax inadvertently made it look like House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was calling President Donald Trump cuckoo in a live TV blunder on Saturday.

Johnson was talking about putting potential limits on who should be eligible for elected office.

“It’s not unlawful for crazy people to run for office,” he said, just as the network cut to a clip of the president in the Oval Office. Oblivious to the poorly timed stock footage, Johnson continued, “That’s happened throughout the history of our country. Never at this level, and never a number of people who are so determined to rip the Constitution in half.”

The mismatched visual choice seemed particularly ironic, given that Johnson was on the air to endorse Trump’s efforts to restrict mail-in voting nationwide, even though the Constitution places voting laws under state authority.

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled that the states that sued to contest Trump’s executive order granting the federal government authority over mail-in voting did not have the legal right to challenge it. However, the decision leaves room for additional court challenges.

If mail-in voting is restricted nationwide, millions of Americans who vote via absentee ballots could be disenfranchised, voting rights groups say.

Although Trump and Republicans have been trying to radically reshape government powers, Johnson claimed the GOP was actually fighting to preserve the nation while Democrats were attempting to undermine American democracy.

“We are now quite literally locked into a contest to determine whether we’re gonna keep our republic, keep the country as it is, or break this down to the foundation and go down an entirely different road toward communism,” he said.
