Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayHouse Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was pressed on Tuesday about the Trump administration’s raid on the home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and the Justice Department’s rules about these kinds of actions this close to an election.
Speaking with Fox News’ Dana Perino, Johnson was asked if the move was “too political.”
“One, can you say anything about the case and what it involves? Or two, are you concerned that it looks too political if the Justice Department allows this to happen right before an election?” Perino asked.
“Well, I was informed after it happened. Look, no one is above the law in our system. And apparently, this was a long series, a long investigation,” Johnson said, adding that a federal judge would have had to have signed off on a warrant.
“And they thought that the evidence merited the search warrant. So we have to reserve judgment and let the system play out as it does,” Johnson said.
While Johnson called the timing of the government’s actions “unfortunate for her [Omar] or others,” he claimed the legal system operates independently of the political system.
The Justice Department has long followed an unwritten policy against actions that could influence voters within 60 days of an election.
Omar was quick to condemn the Monday raid in a social media post, calling it “an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement”
“For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,” she wrote.
The investigation is reportedly related to immigration paperwork filled out by Omar’s now-deceased father when she was a child.
