On the next Empower Hour Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada, joins Tanya Gaw to unpack the latest federal budget outcome—including the narrow 170 to 168 vote that pushed the budget forward and effectively removed the immediate threat of an early election, one that might have reshaped Canada’s political landscape and potentially sidelined figures like Mark Carney.
We’ll also explore the state of the populist movement in Canada. A movement that has been gaining momentum globally, yet faces unique obstacles here at home. In countries such as El Salvador, Argentina, and Italy, populist candidates have seen sweeping victories. But in Canada, many right-leaning voters remain focused primarily on voting out the Liberal Party, rather than voting for a party that reflects their own values, priorities, and concerns about Canada’s future.
We will talk about issues that animate these voters—including debates about immigration levels, crime, cultural cohesion, national sovereignty, and the foundation, based on Judeo-Christian Biblical principles, that have shaped this country. Whether people agree or disagree on the framing, these concerns influence a growing segment of Canadians who feel their voices are marginalized or dismissed in mainstream political discourse.
At some point, Canadians will have to decide how long they’re willing to vote out of fear rather than conviction, and whether a different political outcome requires a different political choice. As the saying goes:
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”
— Henry Ford
