Back in 2018, supermodel Karlie Kloss got married to Joshua Kushner.

The same year that they tied the knot, Kloss told Vogue that she and Kushner “share a lot of the same liberal values” that guide the things that they “stand for.”

In 2020, Kloss opened up further about her and Kushner’s marriage, alluding to the “complications” surrounding his ties with the Trump family. “I really followed my heart on choosing to be with the person that I love, despite any complications that came with it. I knew for me, it was worth it to fight for that,” she said on Diane von Fürstenberg's InCharge with DVF podcast.

Fast-forward to now, and Kloss is once again discussing her and her husband’s politics. Speaking with "Bloomberg Originals" on July 1, she said, “I know who I am. I know the values that guide my life and the issues that I care about. So, you know, I haven’t lost sight of who I am, but also, it’s my husband’s family.”

Clarifying that she’s “never met President Trump,” Kloss went on to state that she’s accustomed to navigating political differences when spending time with her brother-in-law’s family.

“We’re sitting here in St. Louis, which is a blue dot in a red state,” she said. “Since as long as I can remember, I’ve always been exposed to a lot of different political points of view, and I think that trained me for my life.”

“You know, I’m a Democrat. I think it’s possible to have relationships with people who you don’t politically align with,” she said. “And I think this country has always been a place for dialogue. We have to be able to talk to each other.”

An overwhelming number of comments on Reddit and Instagram strongly disagreed with Kloss' take.

“translation = wealth means we can discuss things respectfully without the emotional weight of experiencing the topics themselves,” one top comment read. “If she is not having the tough conversations with that family, she is 100% complicit in everything they do! She is a part of their foundation. There is NO sense of understanding or remorse in her voice or body for the atrocities that family is actively committing,” someone else wrote.

“Silence = complicity,” another person agreed, while someone else said, “Neutrality only helps the oppressors.”

“We are so far past the ‘getting along with people who we don’t align with’ stage. Wake up!!” one person said.

One Reddit user suggested, “You know when people say ‘differing politics’ means making light of it. Because politics isn’t a difference of school vouchers or privatizing social security. It’s morality. It’s world view. It is a detailed map of a person. It’s not interior decorating choices. It’s how you interact with society and the people around you.”

“Rich people always have class solidarity with one another. They can put politics aside because the most important thing for them is capital and the accumulation of it,” another person wrote, while some people labeled Karlie’s response as “low effort” and “scripted.”

Yikes.
