CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, a frequent target of President Donald Trump, tempted the fates Monday by confronting him on the length of his war against Iran.

Collins: You've been bombing Iran for months now. Is this just the new normal for the American people?

Trump: Well, you know, we were in Vietnam for 19 years… pic.twitter.com/qJe3zNs8cW

A recent ceasefire has appeared to crumble. Trump called the Iranians “vicious” “scum” who keep reneging on agreements. The U.S. and Iran have resumed strikes against each other as the U.S. seeks to gain control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Collins, who’s well respected by many for challenging the president, asked: “You noted that the United States is bombing Iran again. I mean, you’ve been bombing Iran for months now. Is this just the new normal for the American people?”

“No, well, you know, we were in Vietnam for 19 years,” Trump replied. “We’re here for four months. So, I think we’ve done a lot. We’ve knocked out their navy in a period of one month. We knocked out their air force. Their air force is nonexistent. We knocked out most of their missiles, most of their drones. We knocked out their drone manufacturing capability, about 92%. Their missile capability for manufacturing, we knocked out 89%. And they have a little capability, but they don’t have any capability for us. This is almost a military skirmish.”

While the president answered with expected glowing claims about the country’s military advantage, his reaction to Collins was more muted than in other encounters when he has responded with personal insults. He did call her network “treasonous” and “fake news” as Collins pressed on later, but did not resort to personal attacks.

In one noteworthy exchange recently in which Collins wasn’t even asking a question, Trump zeroed in on her.

“CNN’s a very corrupt organization, but with a corrupt reporter standing right there,” he said. “Never smiles. ... She’s a young, beautiful woman. Never smiles. I never see a smile on her face. I see her standing there with hatred in her eyes. She has hatred because we have borders, because we have a strong military, because we cut our taxes, because we do things that everybody wanted.”
