The U.S. Secret Service’s chief spokesman and two other communications officials have been placed on administrative leave amid an investigation into potential misconduct.

Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi was among the three employees escorted from Secret Service headquarters in Washington on Monday, RealClearPolitics reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The officials also had their security clearances suspended and were designated “do not admit,” preventing them from entering agency facilities, according to the report.

One source told the outlet that the FBI and CIA are participating in an investigation into how classified or sensitive information allegedly reached the press. The Secret Service has not confirmed that allegation or acknowledged any involvement by the two intelligence agencies.

All three employees worked in the agency’s communications office and held non-law enforcement positions.

The Secret Service confirmed Tuesday that three employees had been placed on leave pending a review by its Office of Professional Responsibility, which investigates allegations of employee misconduct.

The agency did not identify the officials, explain the nature of the potential misconduct or say whether the review involves suspected leaks.

Placing an official suspended during an investigation on administrative leave and temporarily revoking that person’s security clearance are standard precautions. Neither action constitutes a finding of wrongdoing.

The Secret Service said its personnel are held to strict standards of professionalism and integrity and are expected to demonstrate commitment to duty, honesty and courage. The agency declined to comment further while the review remains underway.

It remains unclear whether the investigation is connected to the disclosure of details surrounding President Donald Trump’s secret departure from Turkey earlier this year.

Trump has acknowledged that he left aboard a different military aircraft after the Secret Service and military received information indicating Iran could be plotting an attack. Reports said officials were concerned about a possible surface-to-air missile threat against Air Force One.

Some members of Trump’s staff, Secret Service personnel and journalists departed aboard the presidential aircraft while Trump was quietly moved to another plane.

The disclosure prompted a separate leak investigation initiated from inside the White House. FBI Director Kash Patel was reportedly involved in launching that inquiry, and Secret Service employees were questioned about how details of the operation reached the media.

The Justice Department also subpoenaed New York Times journalists following the newspaper’s reporting on security concerns involving the Qatari-gifted aircraft slated to serve as a future Air Force One. Those subpoenas were later withdrawn.

Another leak investigation began in July after a Secret Service agent assigned to Vice President JD Vance’s protective detail was suspected of providing information about the detail and the vice president’s travel schedule.

That agent was placed on leave, and the investigation remains open.

The latest suspensions come as the Secret Service faces intense pressure over internal leaks and the agency’s performance during a series of assassination threats and plots targeting Trump.

Guglielmi served as the agency’s public face during the fallout from the July 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The attack exposed sweeping security failures, led to the resignation of then-Director Kimberly Cheatle and forced the Secret Service to overhaul several protective practices, including its use of drones and counter-drone technology.

Guglielmi also faced scrutiny over his response to reports that the agency had rejected requests for additional resources from Trump’s protective team.

He initially denied that requests had been rebuffed. The Secret Service later acknowledged that it had denied some requests for specialized resources during the campaign, although the agency said it used state or local law enforcement and other alternatives to fill security needs.

Before joining the Secret Service, Guglielmi held communications positions with police departments in Chicago, Baltimore and Fairfax County, Virginia.
