Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayFox News host Jesse Watters on Tuesday said he knows the United States “owns” the moon in defense of President Donald Trump’s aggressive attempt to annex Greenland. (Watch the video below.)
Yeah, Jesse, and the moon is also made of Swiss cheese.
“The United States always secures her interests, economically, militarily, either by force or purchase. Louisiana Purchase. Alaska. The Philippines. We even got the Marshall Islands after World War II. You don’t even know where they are, Greg. We got the moon. I think we own it,” Watters said on “The Five.”
When a fellow panelist cackled at the claim, Watters doubled down with a straight face. “I know we own it,” he said.
Serious, jesting or anything in between, Watters is wrong.
The United States doesn’t own the moon. Nor does any other nation.
Sure, U.S. astronauts have planted American flags on the lunar surface. But according to the short-named Outer Space Treaty finalized in 1967, there are a few stipulations Watters ought to know about. The longer-named “Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies” dictates that:
“The exploration and use of outer space shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind.”
“Outer space shall be free for exploration and use by all States.”
“Outer space is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.”
“The Moon and other celestial bodies shall be used exclusively for peaceful purposes.”
Watters then gave full-throated approval of Trump’s attempt to take over Greenland despite alienating NATO allies, including Denmark, which owns the semi-autonomous territory.
Trump hadn’t ruled out military force either until Wednesday in Switzerland. But Trump’s aggressive tactics, including his new tariff threats against European nations that don’t fall in line with his quest to control Greenland, continued to damage the alliance.
Echoing Trump’s unproven claims that it’s a strategic must to combat Chinese and Russian expansion, Watters added:
“We have to protect our own supply lines, we have to protect ourselves from missiles coming in from China, and we’re going to do it whether they like it or not. Denmark should take the offer. Denmark cannot defend or develop the island, and they’re in violation of their NATO obligations because they are sworn to defend all of their territory, and they cannot defend it.”
Last week Watters said, “NATO called Trump ‘Daddy.’ Why won’t they give Daddy what he wants?”
