JD Vance’s terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week got even worse Monday night thanks to a terrible gaffe he made during his Fox News interview with Bret Baier.

At one point during the interview, the vice president tried to explain how Iran’s decision to block the Strait of Hormuz was “economic terrorism” while the U.S.’ blockade of ships at Iranian ports was a proportional response.

“As the president of the United States showed, two can play at that game. And if the Iranians are going to try to engage in economic terrorism, we’re going to abide by a simple principle that no Iranian ships are getting out either. We know that’s a big deal to them,” Vance said.

Sadly for Vance, his response sure sounded like he was admitting that his fearless leader was also an “economic terrorist.”

Vance’s response fits the definition of what media types call a Kinsley gaffe: A term devised by journalist Michael Kinsley that means “a mistake where a politician inadvertently says something truthful.”

And, yes, many people on social media were happy to point out Vance’s unforced error.

I like how Vance is dumb enough to go on national TV and admit the government policy they are currently perusing is economic terrorism. https://t.co/QBkApSGpGH

I dont want my country acting like Iranian despots and playing the "game" of "economic terrorism against the entire world."

I thought we were better than them, not like them. https://t.co/pZEoXFTdBM

U.S. sanctions have deliberately crushed the economy of multiple nations, impoverishing millions of innocent people. That’s the definition of economic terrorism. https://t.co/mT8nxXqcFn

What? We’re ALSO engaging in economic terrorism? What a stupid way to talk. It’s two different things phrased in a very bad way. Come on JD. https://t.co/fgLcUoNL19

The US condemning ‘economic terrorism’ is yet another moment of madness when they are the biggest economic terrorists in the history of the world

The US has imposed sanctions on more than one in three people on Earth — restricting food, medicine & trade at a scale unmatched ever https://t.co/jOzCkSthRx

Vance’s Fox News gaffe comes at a touchy time for him.

Last week, he visited Hungary to campaign for autocrat Viktor Orbán (an ally of Russian leader Vladimir Putin), only for his preferred candidate to lose to opponent Péter Magyar.

In addition, he was also unable to negotiate a permanent ceasefire with Iran during meetings in Pakistan last week.
