An ongoing investigation into the strike on an Iranian elementary school that killed scores of schoolchildren has determined that the United States was responsible, according to a report, citing people familiar with the inquiry.
Iranian officials say that at least 175 people were killed in a strike on the Shajarah Tayyebeh elementary school in Minab, southern Iran, on 28 February, the first day of the war. Around 110 children were reportedly included among the casualties. The figures have not been independently verified.
Donald Trump has insisted that the attack “was done by Iran”, while Pete Hegseth, his secretary of defence, has stressed only that the US does not target civilians, and that the Pentagon is investigating.
Now, people briefed on the probe say that early findings suggest that US Central Command was using outdated information from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) to inform its target coordinates.
The sources emphasised to the New York Times that key questions remain, including why the outdated information was not double-checked.
Video footage shared on Sunday appeared to show a US Tomahawk missile hitting a nearby Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facility in Minab on the first day of the war.
