As national Republican leaders and their Indiana cohorts negotiate a tense standoff over redistricting ahead of the midterms, at least one Republican state senator has let himself be swayed by President Donald Trump himself.

But not in a way the president will like.

Late Thursday night, Trump posted a rabid attack on immigrants to his Truth Social page, at one point calling Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) “seriously retarded” for his stance on the issue.

For Indiana state Sen. Michael Bohacek, the president’s use of the slur was over the line.

Not only will he be voting against any redistricting plan to help his party secure more seats in the House, Bohacek wrote, but he hopes that Trump will think about the language he uses.

Many of you have asked my position on redistricting,” the state senator wrote Friday on Facebook. “I have been an unapologetic advocate for people with intellectual disabilities since the birth of my second daughter. Those of you that don’t know me or my family might not know that my daughter has Down Syndrome.”

“This is not the first time our president has used these insulting and derogatory references,” Bohacek continued, “and his choices of words have consequences.”

“I will be voting NO on redistricting,” he said, suggesting that Trump “can use the next 10 months to convince voters that his policies and behavior deserve a congressional majority.”

Bohacek represents an area of northern Indiana between the cities of Gary and South Bend.

Trump’s Truth Social attack against Walz came in response to Wednesday’s shooting of two National Guard troops in Washington, D.C. One of the troops died, while another remains in critical condition.

The president made a baseless claim about Somali refugees in Walz’s state of Minnesota “roving the streets looking for ‘prey.’”

Walz replied to Trump’s insults by questioning Trump’s cognitive health: “Release the MRI results.”

(The White House has refused to give more details about the MRI test Trump’s doctors ordered in October, although the president said he got “the best result.”)

Authorities say the suspect in Wednesday’s shooting is an Afghan national who helped the CIA during the war in Afghanistan; he allegedly drove across the country from Washington state to carry out the attack. Trump has pledged a further crackdown on immigrants from what he calls “Third-World Countries.”

But there is evidence in Trump’s second term that his abrasive style may do more to hurt his party’s chances of holding on to power than help, as the 2026 midterms put control of both the House and Senate up in the air.

Indiana Republicans, who control both the legislature and the governor’s mansion in their state, have gone back and forth on whether they will support a redistricting effort to gerrymander the state in favor of their party.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is expected to join a conference call with the lawmakers on Saturday to discuss the issue, according to Politico.
