Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Iowa, Ashley Hinson, was pressed during an interview with NBC News about a bizarre request she made to her supporters while breaking with President Donald Trump on a major issue.
Speaking with NBC News’ Tom Llamas on Wednesday, Hinson was asked about a recent statement she made requesting gas money from her supporters for the campaign’s bus.
“I just saw a report that said you were asking your supporters for gas money for your bus,” Llamas said before showing a clip from the campaign rally.
“I want you to channel ... into action in getting your friends out to vote, help give us a little gas money for our bus, make sure we’re showing up at the polls, because there is more to do,” Hinson said at the rally in Fort Dodge last week.
“I mean, is that how bad things are?” Llamas asked.
“No, I’m out there campaigning through the state on my bus, meeting with everyone where they are,” Hinson said. “And what I’m hearing from Iowans is that they want a leader, a commonsense mom who is going to focus on their priorities, because there are a lot of Iowans who are being priced out of the American dream. I understand that. I am focused on that.”
Despite seemingly obfuscating her answer, Hinson said she disagrees with Trump’s diesel fuel deal with Russia.
“I think that’s a bad idea. I don’t think we should be making deals with Russia. I do want to see the war come to an end as soon as possible. I want it to be successful,” Hinson said a day before Trump was set to campaign with her in Iowa on Thursday.
It should be noted that Hinson has voted five times against a War Powers Resolution to end the Iran war.
Hinson currently trails her Democratic opponent Josh Turek 48% to 45%, according to the latest Marist poll.
