People ask Mingyur Rinpoche whether he has found the secret of happiness. A special mantra, perhaps. No, he says, he is only joking. It is not a special power and not a special mantra. It is with us all the time. Innate happiness, which he has and which everybody has. What is needed is to recognise it. So, should he tell you his secret? It is to recognise his own awareness, and to recognise the innate love and compassion that are with us always. The surface level of love and compassion comes and goes. The deeper level is always there. And there is wisdom. His favourite practice is what his tradition calls non-meditation, meditation without meditation, simply being with a self-luminous quality that is always present. That, he says, is the ultimate wisdom, and that is his secret. He is honest about the surface. He still feels cold. He needs to eat. When something goes wrong he gets upset sometimes, and he gets tired. But at the deeper level there is contentment and joy, something he can experience but finds very hard to put into words. Basically, he says, very happy. Not the happiness of drinking coffee, which is a high that cannot last. The contentment is the kind that can.
