“These are the deep depths of the ocean. You never see numbers like these,” said Enten of the shift.

Trump — who won pure independent voters by a +15-point margin over Kamala Harris — now holds a net approval rating of -71 points with the demographic, according to Enten, citing averages of a number of polls.

“This is an 86-point shift away from the president of the United States with the group that ultimately really does determine elections,” Enten said.

“As pure independents go, usually so goes the nation. And right now, Donald Trump is at depths that truly, you rarely ever see.”

Enten, teed up by CNN’s John Berman remarking that it’s “almost impossible” to conceive of a bigger shift, pointed out that the group has also soured on Trump when it comes to his handling of the economy.

The group trusted Trump more than Harris on the economy by a +22-point margin in 2024, he noted.

Now? The president has a net approval rating of -77 points.

“And it’s not just one poll, I’m averaging multiple surveys here. Oh, my God,” Enten emphasized. “It’s unbelievable.”

Enten, when asked about how independents are taking higher prices at the gas pump as a result of the president’s unpopular war of choice in Iran, blamed gas prices for driving Trump’s approval numbers “to the deep depths of hell.”

The data guru, who again cited an average of a number of polls, emphasized that 92% of pure independents disapprove of Trump when it comes to gas prices.

“As those gas prices have gone one way, those chances for Republicans holding on to the United States Senate have gone the other way,” he said.

“And it is pure independents that are driving this. Ninety-two percent. Near uniformity.”
