Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayCritics accused Donald Trump of showing a distinct lack of empathy with his comments on the mass shooting at Brown University, in which two people were killed this weekend.
Trump, speaking at the White House Christmas reception, first praised Brown as a “great school, really one of the greatest schools anywhere in the world.”
But the president then said:
“Things can happen, so to the nine injured, get well fast. And to the families of those two who are no longer with us, I pay my deepest regards and respects from the United States of America. Thank you very much. It’s a very important thing to say. And we mean it.”
While Trump did send his “deepest regards,” the “things can happen” line still drew anger on social media:
California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D) press office led the charge with its latest slam of Trump, simply writing on behalf of the potential Democratic 2028 presidential candidate: “No words.”
As always, a towering fountain of empathy.

— Dude (@DudeMetaX) December 14, 2025“Things happen” - that's not leadership, that’s a shrug with a microphone.
— 𝕊𝕦𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕖_𝔾𝕦𝕣𝕝 (@SundaeDivine) December 14, 2025"Things can happen" when guns are not regulated.
— Mademoiselle Maya 🫀✨ (@mayaoviedo) December 14, 2025Bet this is deeply comforting to every victim.
— Caitlin Kelly: veteran journalist, writing coach (@CaitlinKellyNYC) December 14, 2025“Things can happen” is far from an appropriate response.
Embarrassing.
"But on a brighter note, we’re making great progress on the ballroom!" — Trump, probably.
— Doug Borton (@BortonDoug) December 14, 2025All this time to come up with a response and this was what he chose.
— Akash Maniam (@ManiamAkash) December 14, 2025for someone who has been so close to an assassination, I am horrified at now numb he is to tragedy
— Jane Gilbert (@msjanebond007) December 14, 2025Name one time Trump has ever said anything in the face of a tragedy that was reflective of a leader of the free world. NEVER.
— perpetuallycurious (@cahill_claudia) December 15, 2025Surprised he didn't say its Biden's fault for not passing stronger gun laws.
